Another of the most touristy places in London is around Trafalgar Square, which is fascinating and has the free to enter National Portrait Gallery on one side. Walk a couple of blocks away and you’ll see some unique monuments.

#6 Monuments near Trafalgar Square

Many of these are of interest to us as kiwi’s of course and this walk takes you past the extremely out of place NZ House, a very ugly 1960’s tower which sits uncomfortably amongst the beautiful old Embassy buildings nearby. To be fair I was very luck as a young person to have spent some time there including a cocktail party on the rooftop.

If you start at Trafalgar Square walk along Pall Mall until you reach Waterloo Place. Here you will find the Banksy which is a large sculpture of a man with a flag wrapped around his head, stepping on the plinth high above your own head.

It sits amongst other historic memorial artefacts including – the Bronze Guards of the Crimean War, Florence Nightingale, the Dukes of Wellington and York, various Lords and other leaders and for us Kiwi’s there is a statue of Robert Falcon Scott and another of Sir Keith Park.

You see wonderful glimpses of Buckingham Palace from here (and from Trafalgar Square) and are adjacent to The Mall. If you walk along the Mall there are plenty of other monuments and sculptures to check out.

We have been to Trafalgar Square plenty of times and went there this time to see the Trojan Horse from the movie The Odyssey but they had just moved it (don’t worry we saw it when we visited Shepherds Bush) so only saw lots of fencing and machines blocking off most of the square. Don’t let this put you off this whole area is fantastic to visit.
