Kiwi Roaming

There are farms where city folk can enjoy experiences not far from London, pumpkins at halloween, daffodils in spring and sunflowers / lavender in summer.

We took a short drive to Hitchin Lavender farm for an afternoon outing. The wows started at the carpark, paddocks of lavender spread out before us and look amazing on mass from a distance. We got our wristbands in entry and then decided first order of business was to try their lavender flavoured soft serve ice cream, the colour was amazing but flavour a little too subtle for us. Refreshing on a hot day.

We walked through the lavender fields, which is easy to do with row formation, there are different varieties and the constant hum of bees as you walk. There is a slight rise in the elevation and a lovely view of the countryside of Hertfordshire. We had a little bit of cloud cover but the breeze was hot so no respite from the heat.

This section is a small part of a much larger working lavender farm. They also have a farm shop, cafe, playground and other activities all designed to bring families as a destination activity.

After wandering through the lavender we ventured into the sunflower crop. There were hundreds of children here and the path cut for walking though the lavender wanders amongst the flowers so amazing for kids.

With the breeze the sunflowers were harder to photograph but we loved the challenge. There were too many people here, many paid to pick flowers but there were so many this didn’t detract. No idea what Karen paid for our entry tickets but we did enjoy the scale of this place. Followed up by a late lunch in the cute nearby town of Hitchin.
