When we left NZ in August 2025 our friend Ben suggested we go to a Michelin Star restaurant in every country we visited. We didn’t do this in Spain, Portugal or Italy as the cuisine is so different and experiences fantastic without this extra level of investment. We also didn’t in Switzerland as it was just so very expensive to buy a cheap meal. So decided we should enjoy the experience in London.
Our philosophy for eating out was to to make our eating out meal Lunch – either going for cheap meal deals at Tesco or Sainsbury kind of thing – or to splurge. I found the Kerfield Arms on Instagram. They were awarded their Michelin Star in February 2026 and offer a lunch special on weekdays making it a price accessible option for a Michelin Star food experience.

The lunch special our day was an Ox tongue reuben for £12 + add a beer or wine for an additional £3 making it a very cheap lunch in a fantastic gastropub. I had been worried we didn’t have fancy clothes and made this comment in my booking form, when we arrived we were greeted by friendly front of house one who told us this was a neighbourhood pub so fancy clothes not required. Our waitress India really took the time to chat with us – including how she used to work for a kiwi owned restaurant and it was a very different (fun) experience for her. Everything about the service was amazing, from discrete table wiping between courses, to a full water bottle at all times, and the friendly chatter.
Steve and I opted for the full menu experience sharing Taramasalata with Fried pizza dough bites with a glass of champagne while we studied the menu. We chose the Lamb and Monkfish for our mains (which we shared) with sides of a salad (too massive to eat) and Piattone Beans (so yum). Everything was delicious, well presented and perfectly sized.

The place had filled up by the time we finished our mains, surprisingly only about half of the restaurant were eating the lunch special – we thought this might be all they do during the day. We were also surprised to see so many young couples with newborn babies out on their first dates post birth – was lovely to see.
The absolute hero of this place is their donut, I have recommended to other people to go for the lunch special and the donut if they want the full experience without the price of the main menu. It was divine, we paired it with cheese and crackers to finish off our meal and finished up our bottle of rose before hopping back on the bus after a 3 hour lunch experience. Honestly it was fantastic, not cheap but for us worth it. The Michelin Stars have been awarded in NZ this month as well and our absolute favourite in Wellington Jano got one star too.
